King leads protests against segregated department

King is arrested. Martin Luther King Jr. writes "Letter From Birmingham
Jail." This letter later became a classic of the civil rights movement. |

King leads the March on Washington. Over 250
thousand civil-rights supporters attend. At the Lincoln Memorial, King delivers the
